How to choose the perfect post length and size for your website or a blog?

This is one of the most common question people ask me through my contact form. They want to know how much they should write to be more professional and effective as a blogger or a writer.

In this post I would try to help you decide which length is the perfect for you and your website. The articles (posts) are one of the most important factors for every blog or a website out there.

Articles provide you traffic from all sources. Including traffic from the search engines like Google, Yahoo! or Bing. The more quality article means more quality visitors for your website. And every experienced webmaster or a blogger knows this!

I have spent a lot of time to research and compose all these info only for you. So, here is the whole research process I have done to find which the perfect post length for your site is.

I have used this research on 30 most popular blogs around the world – in different niches. In most cases, I have used data’s from the latest 5 blog posts from all these blogs.

I have collected 5 different blogs in every of the six niches: Marketing, Entertainment, The Most Popular Blogs, Politics, Gadgets & Tech and Personal blogs. Additionally, I have included this blog in the Marketing section – it is included in these results too.

As a word counter, I have used the latest Microsoft’s Word. Then I have collected and automated these results in Excel. I have done this in Microsoft Office 2010 beta for Windows operating system.

Average post length on the most popular blogs

On the above chart you may see the exact results. You clearly see that the post length strongly depends on a blog niche. An average words per post on these niches where exactly:

Marketing – 882 words per post
Gadgets & Tech – 576 words per post
Popular Blogs – 281 words per post
Entertainment – 433 words per post
Personal – 674 words per post
Politics – 382 words per post

Note that blogs under “Popular Blogs” niche are blogs which are in top 10 most popular blogs on Technorati.com directory. These are not included in other categories!

It is not hard to notice that the lowest value is on these “most popular” blogs on the internet. An average words per-post for all 31 blogs in this research is 538 exactly!

So, regarding this research the magical number is 538! That means you would need to post around 500 words for every post you are willing to publish to follow some modern standards on the internet. Of course, you could post larger and a smaller posts, but keep this number in mind every time you write something for your blog or a website.

Note that if you have a 1000+ words per post – it does NOT mean that post is a top quality post on the internet. You would need to have some writing skills and experience to create such effective and productive posts before anything.
