What I Have Learned from Recent Downtime

You probably know that I’ve had mayor downtime recently. This causes a lot of problems for me and this blog, but also, I’ve learned some valuable lessons for the future. The worst thing is that I’ve been on the vacation while downtime is happened, so I couldn’t act faster than I do.

What I've Learned from a Recent Downtime

My Mistakes

Anyway, I’ve learned a few lessons that can be very useful in the future. For myself and for my site too. First, I’ll list my primary mistakes I’ve made on my site.

  • My database is updated regularly and daily, but not entire site
  • Upload folder (included images, plugins and themes) wasn’t up to date
  • Deleted 9 quality posts on my blog

So, primary mistake was older backup of my site files. Database actually only includes options, posts, comments and other settings and contents – but not includes physical files on your sites like images, files, themes and other things you host on your site.

Of course, database is very important – without it you don’t have anything. Loosing your database on the specific time can force you to start ALL over again!

In the Future

I’m going to backup my database daily. It’s an automated process which send me a message to my e-mail with attached database in it. I do that through the WP DB Backup plug-in. This is very useful and helpful plug-in for sure.

Also, I’d try to backup my content folder (folder that includes all plugins, themes and uploads) at least once whenever I post something new on my blog.

Because of that, I can be sure to have most up-to-date files for my blog. This may help me to act fast if my site goes down and lost a lot of quality and valuable elements.

Conclusions

We all learn from our own mistakes. From now on, I’ll backup my site more regularly to be sure not to loose again some valuable posts on my blog. Anyway, over 90% of the material is saved and can be accessed again. Thank you for your patience and visits.

I hope that I’ve force you to think about this and take regular backups of your website.
