Notepad is one of the few tools that have always been a part of Windows, but in the process of updating and improving the OS, were left behind and have not updated at all. There’re many free alternatives on the internet, just because one reason – Notepad is one of the worst applications available today.

Today, when we use a modern machines, with couple GB’s of RAM and space, it’s not normal to use this “old” application. There’re so many free alternatives and replacements that can do the work much, much better than default Windows Notepad.

1. Notepad++

It’s for sure one of the most popular default Windows Notepad replacement. It’s my favorite application that I use very often. Supports many languages and has many features. Translated into more than 40 languages, tab support included, constantly updated, drag-n-drop support, code highlight feature and much much more! You need to try this nice and effective application.

2. Notepad2

A fast and light-weight Notepad-like text editor with syntax highlighting. This program can be run out of the box without installation, and does not touch your system’s registry. This is a very powerful application, much more powerful than default notepad in Windows. Use it if you don’t like the app above.

3. PSPad

it’s a freeware programmer’s editor for Microsoft Windows operating systems. PSPad handles near any syntax available on the internet, including HTML, PHP, XHTML, JavaScript, ASP, Perl, C++ and much much more. Also, supports multi-language interface and third-party extensions.

4. Metapad

This is a small, fast (and completely free) text editor for Windows 9x/NT/XP/Vista with similar features to Microsoft Notepad but with many extra (and rather useful) features. It was designed to completely replace Notepad since it includes all of Notepad’s features and much, much more.
