Carefully selected domain names can increase your search engine rankings and overall direct visitors.
What’s a Domain Name?
There’re many definitions around the internet regarding a domain names. To put it a simple, I’d say that domain name is actually an physical address for your blog on the internet. Something very similar to your home street address.
There’re so many domain extensions today. Extension is an www.domainname.com or www.domainname.net… Today, there’re over 50* domain names available for anyone to register and use.
* based on the GoDaddy current domain extension availability
I should not mention that three most popular extensions today are .com, .net and .org. I also need to add that .info domains are really cheap and used widely because of that. But you need to note that .info domain names are cheap at the first registration only – in most cases.
Generally, it’s not important which domain extension you use – as long it looks professional and give you the right results for your blog. But I’d recommend you to stick up with .com or .net. These domain extensions have a much better potential for the visitors.
Things to Consider when Choosing a Domain Name
There’re many things you should consider when choosing a domain name for your blog. I will list the most productive factors that can help you to choose your own domain name.
- Your blog niche – This is an obvious starting point – think about which topics are coverable for your blog. Most blog names reflect their topic in a domain name.
- What do you expect – It’s important to know what do you expect from your blog actually. Is it going to be a personal or professional brand-making potential blog. You need to think about this a lot.
- Other things – There’re so many other things to consider – from the writing style you’re going to use on your blog to the potential audience it’s related to.
Once you get a picture for it, it’s important to do some research and find the most appropriate blog domain name.
How to Choose a Domain Name?
Well, you get on the hardest part of this guide – choosing a domain name for your blog. Luckily, there’re many tools that can help you to choose your own domain name:
- Keyword Research – This is a very effective way to choose your own domain name. Use some of Keyword Research tools to get the keyword suggestions. It’s really easy to choose and pick the right domain name from your keyword. All you need to do is to type in the related keyword and list will be provided to you.
- Domain Availability – Of course, it’s important to know is that specific domain name is available for the registration. I specially like the free online live tools that can help you to see the domain name availability like Psychic Whois or Instant Domain Check.
Note that we’re talking about keyword-based domain names. There’re also a brand-based domain names, created around a brand name you choose. This is a blog which is a brand-based and there’s no any related keyword attached to this domain name bashbosh.com – right?
Keyword-related domain names can be very effective and productive. Anyway, it’s all up to you and actually what do you expect from your site or domain name.
It’s also important to research as much you can and try all available names that comes to your mind. If it’s possible, you should write the available domain names and choose later one of them for you. You need to choose the best possible domain name for your blog or a website – once you pick it there’s no turn back (or at least it’s not recommended).
Best Possible Domain Name
You should know few factors on the deciding which domain name you’re going to use as your own domain for your blog or a website. Take as long you need to choose the best possible own domain name that:
- It’s related to your market – Choose the right domain name that’s related and makes sense to your website targeted audience or the market.
- Not Too Long – People likes when they see not too long domain names. Also, this may improve your professional look and overall potential loyal visitors count.
- Easy to Remember – Of course, you need to take care that domain name is easily remembered to your targeted audience. This way you can build up a good and effective audience and get some quality loyal-visitors to your blog completely for free.
You should know that people usually remember the easy domain name extensions like .com, .net, .org or .tv. Other extensions have not that potential, specially the long ones. Also, you should care to write down your domain name as one phrase – I really hate when I see a website with “-“ included into the domain name.
Domain Name Registration
Once you get a name for your domain name, of course you need to purchase it from the authorized domain registration service on the internet.
The most popular domain name registrants are:
- GoDaddy – The most popular domain name registration service on the internet. With more than 3 millions of the active domain registrations through this service.
- NameCheap – Very nice-featured domain name registration service. Usually provides more features than any other domain name provider for lowest price.
- Yahoo! Domains – Secure domain name registration from the Yahoo!. Through I’ve read so many bad reviews for it, but it’s very popular. I’ve to say that’s too expensive too – compared to competition.
The domain registration process is easy in most cases. The most services supports multiple payment supports and many services and features supported.
