How to Find a Blog That is Worth Buying

August 24th, 2009 | Categories: Web Site Tips

Recently, Gennice has asked me to post something about buying a blogs on the internet. I’ve promise to him that I’ll do that, and that’s why I’ve created this post. Actually, it was a very good and quality post idea from him. So,  right now, I’m going to help you how to buy a quality blog and how to choose which to buy among others which are available for sale.

How to Find a Blog That's worth Buying?

Buying a good and quality blog gives you many advantages and potential to build up your business. You should care about lots of stuffs before you’re going to purchase a blog permanently. Like in the real-world you can be easily fooled and cheated, so you should definitely take care about where do your money going and for whom.

Thrust? I don’t think so!

When you found an interesting blog you’re looking at to buy, it’s very important to do some research and find as much as you can information about that specific blog. You should never take the owners at their word – in any case!

Find as much as you can find for that specific site by searching the Google, Archive.org, whois records or anything else that can be used to help you with your decision. For example, if they use a Google Analytics service to track down the visitors, you should ask them to make you an account to see it personally. Always ask them if they can give you some “live” access to their services.

I don’t believe in the screenshots. They can be easily created, boosted and edited by any little-experienced user which know little more about Photoshop or any other similar photo-editing software.

Don’t Pay to Much

It’s important to care about this too. Most of the potential buyers easily gets caught up in the excitement of an auction. Take your time and set your purchase limits at the beginning – for each website or a blog you’re going to bid on!

Of course, some website owners offers you to buy their sites permanently by offering you the “Buy Now” price. This is the price which is usually much more higher than the initial beginning price.

Don’t be Afraid

Don’t be afraid to contact the seller with any questions. Important thing here is not to be embarrassed or shy. You should know that there is no such thing as a stupid or not appropriate question where your money is concerned and involved.

It’s important to force the potential seller to tell you the information you’re looking for. Of course, most of them will try to keep as much as information for you – not providing you the real “problem” in the background.

Sellers usually forget to inform you about the following things:

  • Hosting Costs – Most of the website sellers don’t provide more information about this very important factor. They usually know to present you the revenue per month but not the hosting costs. Today, bandwidth is not important as resources your website uses on the hosting server. Of course, more resources you spend, the more money you’ll pay for them – simple as that.
  • Time to Work – I’ve noticed that most of the sellers won’t give you this information also. Some websites and blogs are created with not-popular Content Management Systems which you’re not used into. This can automatically limit that website or a blog potential and get you much time to start working on.
  • Support – When you’re going to buy a blog or a website, it’s always a good to find out if that specific seller gives any kind of support regarding to that site you’re going to buy. It’s always a good to contact someone when something went wrong for you.

Check Again

If you’re going to purchase that specific blog or a website, it’s good to check again the following things which are one of the most important for every successful website or a blog sale. It’s good to back-up all these information provided like passwords, usernames, accounts, licenses and any other important stuffs including:

  • Domain Transfer – make sure they transfer the domain name to your account
  • Hosting account – it’s very important to take care about the hosting too
  • Database, applications and licenses support and optimizations
  • FeedBurner, Newsletter and Subscriptions access

You should never join an auction unless you have some kind of plan. What you should do with this website if you win, what can you do, how much money it will get for you… these are only one of the questions you should need to care of when you’re going to attend an auction.

How to Find an Appropriate Blog to Buy

First of all, you should need what do you want to buy and what do you want from that specific blog you’re going to buy! When you know that, you should look after for the following things:

  • Blog Niche – Blog niche is a very important factor to consider if you’re going to buy a blog. You need to know something about that niche to properly maintain that blog. I always try to create at least 20+ future post ideas when I’m going to buy a blog from other blogger. This can save you a lot of time and help you to start updating that blog right after you make an purchase.
  • Earnings revenue – The first thing you should consider if you’re going to buy a blog is the earning potential that specific blog can get. Most of sellers would provide you the approx. earnings through the main advertisement or affiliate networks on the internet. Consider how much money can you get from it.
  • A Blog Traffic – Of course, this is one of the main aspects for every blog on the internet. I think about traffic as an online currency. The more traffic blog gets, the more money it can get. A blog traffic can show you how quality is that specific blog, how much can you do from it and many other things.
  • Blog Expenses – You should specially take care about hosting and domain costs of that specific blog. Also, you should take care about the contents on that blog. A blogs with a lot of multimedia files (images, videos, audio…) usually use a lot of bandwidth, and blogs with a large scripts and complex design can use a lot of server resources.
  • Look for a Prove – You should not ever buy a blog when you’re not completely sure that’s the right blog for you. Feel free to ask owners to show you proves you want them to show you. Also, don’t believe in every image they’re going to show you. Try to find an appropriate and real proves. Plain images and photos can be created and edited (boosted) easily with any photo-related software you can find on the internet.

Final Thoughts

I think that no one can tell you which blog you should purchase. The best way is to follow your instincts and take care about all things mentioned above.

One of the most important things here is to keep it low, don’t try to rush into anything! Think about all at least 3 times before you’re actually make an offer for that specific blog. Purchasing a blog can be a tricky-business, by having the patience and little knowledge, you can low the risks at the minimum.

I hope I’ve helped you to know little more about this topic. If you have any questions, feel free to post them below using our comments. I’d be glad to help you out.

Wow! Great post. You have really covered pretty much everything that someone needs to know when buying already established blog from someone.

I would also suggest to check if the blog is banned by Google or other search engines before you buy it. (reason for banning is black-hat SEO techniques or spam) That can happen sometimes, and then your new blog will not be able to be indexed by Google, and we all know that's already a failure.

This deserves to be tweeted! :) Oh, and thanks for the link Ljiljan! Keep writing great stuff like this!
