How to Choose Web Hosting

July 7th, 2009 | Categories: Web Site Tips

This is a third post in the series of posts regarding to “How to Create a Powerful Blog” topic. At first step, I’ve explain to you why you should use a Wrodpress as your main blogging system. Second step was all about how to choose the right domain name for your blog, and this is the third post in these series where I’ll help you to choose right and most appropriate web hosting for your blog.

Once you get a domain name and little experience in blogging, it’s time to choose a web hosting that’ll host your blog on the internet. Web hosting provider is a company that provide space on a server owned by provider – allowing customers to host their website for a specific (usually flat-rate) price for the month.

First Thing to Know

A first thing you should know is some basic information about web hosting providers:

  • Limitations – All hosting providers provide some limitations like space, bandwidth, domain add-on support, process limitation and usage limitations. You should carefully choose your primary hosting provider.
  • Cheap-Expensive – Web hosting is extremely cheap at the beginning, but as your site grows you need to switch to more powerful hosting solution – because your site may use much more resources. Of course, more power means more expenses for you.
  • Thrust potential – There’re so many different hosting providers on the internet. And many of them are just fake. Do full-research before you apply for the selected hosting provider to avoid main problems.

Web Hosting Limitations

Any web hosting provider on the internet gives you some kind of limitations. And yes, most today’s hosting providers uses a simple marketing trick which I call “unlimited effect”. This is applied on most web hosting providers to the monthly space and bandwidth* limitations.

* – Bandwidth is a measure for your site traffic – In the theory, “unlimited” bandwidth should provide the unmetered number of visitors (traffic) to your blog anytime – unfortunately only in the theory!

Think about it a little, why they provide the dedicated or virtual server solutions (costs $100+/month) if everything you want is an “unlimited” bandwidth and space? Most shared-hosting (default and most popular hosting type) plans are costs from $4.00 to $10.00 per month.

To find our “real” limitations behind the mask you need to read carefully Terms of Service for the selected hosting provider. The real information should be provided there. Most shared-hosting types gives you limitations to resource usage, and unfortunately, in most cases they provide only the percent of allowed resource usage – not real limitations.

This can cause your site to break and close your hosting account from the selected hosting company. This was happened on my previous shared-hosting provider before couple of days. Resource usage is usually related to the automatic scripts and services that runs on your site (mostly on the background) that can use a lot of resources.

Web Hosting Types

I’m not going to provide you the information about free-hosting solutions. Because, I think that you simply can’t compare the free-hosting with a paid-hosting provider.

Shared Hosting Solution

This is the most popular and most common hosting solution for the websites and blogs around the internet. Refers to a web hosting service where multiple sites reside on one large web server which’s connected to the internet. Each site use it’s own partition (place) on the server to keep it separate from others.

Cloud Hosting

Cloud (aka. Clustered) Hosting is a relatively new hosting solution for websites and blogs around the internet. Refers to a web hosting service where sites works with a multiple servers (not just one) and take the resources once they need them from other servers – connected one to another to get better performances and stability.

It’s an complex hosting solution and usually a lot more expensive than Shared Hosting solution. I’ve to note that this site is now hosted with GoDaddy Grid hosting which works on the similar technology.

Virtual Dedicated Server

Virtual Dedicated and dedicated hosting solutions are reserved for sites that have medium-mid traffic. This hosting solution is an actually fully hosting solution for your site. You get your own customizable server and choose what to use with it. This hosting solution is usually more expensive than any above mentioned solution.

Dedicated Server

Dedicated server hosting solution is top of the hosting for any site or a blog with high traffic. This way, you actually own the specific physical server – where your sites are hosted on ONLY – not shared with other ones. A whole computer server just for one site? Cool isn’t it?

But to enjoy in the dedicated server comfort you need to pay the most for it. Usually it’s over the $100.00 per month.

Choosing the Right Hosting for your Blog

It’s all up to the research. Try to gather as many information you can for the selected hosting company you want to host your blog with. The most popular method is to search for the reviews on the internet. All you need to do is to type in the following term in the search engine form:

HostName Reviews or HostName Review

Note that you should replace the HostName term to the actual hosting provider name, for example GoDaddy.

You should read carefully the long and unique reviews – these reviews are mostly true. Also, you should care about the negative reviews too – most popular hosting providers can get many negative reviews, created from the competition and other unsatisfied customers.

But you need to take care about following factors:

  • It’s important how much traffic your site get’s
  • It’s all up to your requirements and desires
  • And of course, how much it costs.

If you can cover your hosting expenses with the revenue from your blog, than it’s very good for you. Your blog can actually work and make money for your all hosting expenses and costs for sure. Specially at beginning.
