Backup is one of the most important things every blogger or a webmaster should do regularly. Backup is important in various of ways, mostly to secure your online data to be restored once when things goes wrong – believe me, they usually do!

Today, most blogging systems have support for backup your own posts and comments easily and within the easy interface. I will show you the most basic ways to backup your WordPress or a Blogger (Blogspot) based blogs below:

Wordpress Backup WordPress Backup – Any WordPress-powered blog has this option. No matter is it a free or a self-hosted blog you can easily backup and restore your posts and comments with only a few clicks.

  • WP-DB Backup – This is a WordPress plug-in which allows you to backup your MySQL database. Of course, you can always try to manually backup your website – no matter where it is hosted and which content management system it uses. Once you have your own manual backup prepared, you will need to store it securely online.

You will do that using following services, or popularly called online backup services:

  • Amazon S3 – I am very satisfied with this service. Allows you to store GB’s of data and files on secured and reliable servers for a little price. Space and bandwidth on Amazon S3 is based on the micro-payment system – so you will pay only that much you use!

  • Dropbox – One of the most popular online backup and file synchronization services available on the internet. Gives you 2 GB’s of space completely for free! Works with most popular operating systems and have a very advanced client. Works with iPhone too!

If you do manual backups of your website, make sure to backup your files and your database! It is a very important thing – specially the database because it usually includes the most important parts of every website – articles, content, settings and comments!

Also, take a note to the special parts of your website like where do you store images (files), theme and design files, CSS styles and everything else you might need. Once you do a quality backup, it is a much easier to restore it if things goes wrong!

    Thanks for the share. When we first started backing up our small projects we used Box.net. That quickly became a pain because it was a manual process. It did have it's perks for group collaboration but just wasn't the tool we needed.

    We just recently got accepted as a beta test for a new web based backup solution called Siteplanb.com. So far I like what I see. They just added mysql backup support which a a must for any blog backup; it also does file versioning allowing you to keep multiple versions of files.
